A Heart of Thanks (Psalm 103:1-5) Thanksgiving
It Doesn’t have to be Thanksgiving to be Thankful! We hope you enjoy this post in May :D
The Scripture for this message is Psalm 103:1-5 NKJV
Praise for the Lord’s Mercies A Psalm of David. 103
Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: 3 Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, 4 Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, 5 Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
We can learn something from David especially as we approach Thanksgiving because my guess is that most of us here have things that are kind of diminishing our gratitude in life.
The things that diminish our gratitude, our worries and anxieties, and concerns and the wrong focus, those things can strip us of appreciation for what has happened and what is in our lives and what God has blessed us with.
So, David is a man just like us and he struggled with the same kind of challenges that we have, as well and in the midst of that, he counsels himself to bless the Lord. He commands himself. This is in the command form and the Hebrew, it's not a suggestion, it's not like "oh come on David, come on" He's not standing in front of the mirror and saying, "you know you wimp get with it, buck up, pull yourself up by your bootstraps man." He's not saying that he's saying "David bless the Lord, bless the Lord. That word bless means to honor or to exalt or to glorify and he's telling himself and his soul to bless God. Why his soul? Because the soul is a seat of emotions and feelings and I don't know about you, but my emotions and feelings sometimes aren't a very accurate measurement of the true standing I have with God. My emotions and my feelings sometimes can take me to places that aren't even logical or real and David understands that, so he commands his soul, the seat of his emotions that are so unpredictable and so unreliable, and he tells his soul to worship God and he says not only that, but he says all that is within me bless His Holy Name.
We hope you've enjoyed this replay of a message Pastor Bob Hallman delivered Thanksgiving 2013.
